Description
Devotional literature is that literature which explores the inner religious life of individuals. It is the use of literary means for personal meditation and reflection. As such, it is closely allied with the personal essay. This does not label works whose primary purpose is to teach or interpret Mormon doctrine and theology (which are generally excluded from this resource), or works known in the book trade as "inspirational" literature, which are also not included in the Mormon Literature Database unless their literary dimension is established.

Genre History
Although much less developed than the devotional literatures of Catholic or Protestant traditions, Mormon devotional writing has become an increasingly popular medium of literary expression, especially starting in the late twentieth century.
