Genre History
For many decades students attending the institutions of higher learning within the Church Educational System of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have attended campus-wide speaking events known either as "devotional" or "forum" addresses. While devotional speeches have typically been given by general authorities of the Church, by educational leaders leaders within the Church, and by faculty members, forum addresses are more academic in nature and secular in their topics. While given in a Mormon setting and to an LDS audience, forum addresses are typically about political, contemporary, and academic subjects and less frequently about religion. Forum addresses have featured many important and respected guests of the university.
