Description
Historical fiction written by our about Mormons begins with Susa Young Gates' John Stevens' Courtship: A Story of the Echo Canyon War (also a romance), but became a prominent Mormon literary genre in the late twentieth century with the phenomenal success of Gerald Lund's The Work and the Glory series and Dean Hughes' Children of the Promise series. Historical fiction featuring Mormon subjects or by Mormon authors is now a staple in many genres, including Romance, Young Adult literature (such as the award-winning Charlotte's Rose by A. E. Cannon), science fiction (such as Orson Scott Card's Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus, etc. Of important note is the trilogy of historical novels by Margaret Young and Darius Gray about black Latter-day Saints, Standing on the Promises. A closely related genre is Scripture-based Fiction.
