| Genre History The romance has had a mixed history in Latter-day Saint culture. It has been upon the basis of many of the conventions of 19th century romance writing that early Mormon church leaders spoke out against the novel generally. And yet, throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty first, romance fiction remains a compelling kind of genre fiction for Mormon readers and writers, with many of the most published and read Mormon authors writing in this genre.
