Significant Mormon Elements
Subjects: dance; New York City;
Jenny, an LDS girl from Utah, begins NYU's dance program. In New York she makes friends with an LDS film student and falls in love with a decidedly non-LDS musician. Eventually she is faced with the choice of whether to follow her infatuation or marry within the faith.
From the cover: "Produced by Cary Derbidge and directed by Ryan Little, Out of Step, "one of this year's best films (4 stars Temple Square.com)", is coming to your home after a smashing theater debut. Starring Michael Buster (God's Army) as the good LDS guy, Jeremy Elliot (Charly, The Testaments), as the eye-candy non-LDS guy, and introducing Allison Akin Clark as the young, talented LDS Girl from Utah who goes to New York to become a professional dancer. She has her challenges both in obtaining the scholarship she needs and in every aspect of her values and testimony. A coming of age story ("The Mormon Flash Dance" Deseret News) and a must see for all families, young adults and teens."
This is Ryan Little's first theatrical feature film, preceding the much more successful Saints and Soldiers. It was released near the 2002 Winter Olympics head-to-head against The Singles Ward, and hence was quickly withdrawn, to be put out again a few months later. Some exteriors were shot in New York, but others and all the interiors were shot in Utah.
One dream, two guys, eternal possibilities.
