Genre:  Biography / Memoir
Summary:
Joseph Fielding Smith, the tenth president of the Church. A grandson of Hyrum Smith and a son of President Joseph F. Smith, Joseph Fielding Smith has the unique position of bridging the pioneer past with the present. Born into a polygamist family in 1876, he was separated from his parents at age eight when they were exiled to Hawaii to protect his father and others from being tried for plural marriage. As a newlywed, he was called to serve a two-year mission in Great Britain at a time of great opposition to Mormonism. Though he did not perform a single baptism, he diligently sowed seeds for the remarkable growth that would later take place in the Church there. He returned home to start his family and began working at the Church Historical Department. His early years were filled with refining experiences that prepared him for his call to the apostleship, where he served for almost sixty years-longer than any other person in this dispensation. From his youth, he was an avid reader of the scriptures, which influenced his literary style. He wrote many doctrinal works and compiled Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith. [publisher blurb]
